While everyone else has already put up their Christmas tree and lights after Thanksgiving, we are just beginning. Advent is the 4 weeks before the season of Christmas and it has allowed me to truly savor the seasons as two separate times. Typically the first Sunday we get out our Advent wreath, movies and books of the season. The second Sunday we will begin putting up some decorations around the house. The third Sunday is Gaudete Sunday or Joyful Sunday, and it is then that we put up our Christmas tree and final decorations. The fourth Sunday is typically spent making Christmas cookies and wrapping packages.

When Christmas arrives it is not just the day but a new season; the Advent wreath leaves and a large white candle is placed on the table to remind us that Our Saviour is born. This is the time I like to have my annual Christmas party and do fun activities with the kids. Christmas season goes till Jan 6th - ending with the Three Kings Day feast. The Christmas season has become for me a truly joy filled time that has followed a time of peace and calm.

Many people who want to begin a business remind me those who forget the Advent time. Like those who put up their Christmas trees and lights on Thanksgiving, they expect everything to happen at once. But in truth, building your own business is more like Advent. There is a time of preparation. Many business owners have a season of growth and learning;learning who their true client is,learning to market effectively and most importantly, learning about themselves.

Like Advent and Christmas, those business owners who separate the time of preparation and the time of growth find themselves with more peace and more joy. The stress level is lowered knowing that there is a time for every season. And like those of us who separate the two seasons, business owners are able to truly enjoy the season of reaping, getting new clients, watching their profits grow and expanding their business at a new level. And I especially enjoy assisting those who have a desire to grow as entrepreneurs with a simple proven system. To find out more about how you can begin your new business during the Advent season, email me or call me directly.

Make it a great Advent!

Business Education - A New Way

I love being an entrepreneur! I love talking to business owners and finding out why and how they got their start. We never talked about such things when I was growing up. Yet, my brother had many books on sales, marketing and having the right attitude. I remember reading a book at his house called Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. This was the first book that taught me the idea that our thinking can determine our actions. Unfortunately, I never discussed the fact that I read that book with my brother, nor any other ideas about business or entrepreneurship.

I have a great desire to have my children read such books because I know how much they have assisted me in my journey. One day, I read on an ezine about how someone had encouraged their teenager begin this journey of personal development by actually paying the teen after he read and discussed the books. I loved the idea and decided to implement that with my own children.

So, yesterday was my son's 14th birthday! We discussed this idea a few days before. I told him that there were a number of books I thought would assist him in his personal development and his desire to become an entrepreneur. Here's what we came up with: a list of 25 books to be read in order. One book, with a 500 word essay of what the book was about and what he learned, would be turned into me before the 18th of each month. After our discussion, I would then place a set amount of money in an account to begin building the nest egg for the purchase of his own car. But here's the deal: it's all 25 books or nothing! If he doesn't finish the list, the money has to sit there and be used for college. If he finishes all the books, he will have a nice nest egg to purchase a car of his choice- once he gets his license and after achieving his eagle scout.

"Great!," he said," I have to get my eagle scout AND do all this reading before I can drive."

"Yes, but think of it," I replied," You still win. If you finish all these books you will be way ahead of most college students. Maybe you will have figured out what business you want to start. And you will be able to have enough money to buy a new car of your choice. If you don't read all of them, you'll have a nice nest egg for college, and you will have been exposed to some of the ideas that have made other entrepreneurs successful. So, either way, you'll have more money and will have expanded your mind as well."

"Yeah, I guess you're right," he agreed, "and it'll help me in my writing as well"

Later, I started thinking, "what if everyone challenged themselves to read a book a month? How would our society change?"

Are you ready for a change? Are you ready to start your journey of personal development?
If you want the list of books I'm giving to my son, email me at: janeinlpaso@gmail.com

The Veteran's Wife

Yesterday in the US was Veteran's Day. My husband and son were dutifully up at 5:30 to go around the neighborhood and place flags in neighbors' yards as a fundraiser with the Boy Scouts. They do this about 6 times a year and round robin the duty so one patrol doesn't have the brunt of it all.

Later, our young neighbor boy brought over a card for my husband. Although this family wasn't in our neighborhood when my husband was called back on active duty, he still knew that Steve had served and felt it appropriate to honor him in this special way. I laughed, as he didn't know I too was in the military for 3 years.

In the afternoon talking to my sister, she asked me about a poem about the "Waiting Wife" if I knew about it or heard about it.( My sister suffers from some memory loss due to an event that put her in a coma for 6 weeks about 14 years ago.) She ended with the comment, "Maybe these are the first 2 lines of a poem I'm supposed to write about waiting wives." She should know! As a wife of 21 years to a military officer there were many deployments, Vietnam, Germany, Korea not to mention simple exercises that had her husband gone for weeks at a time.

As I am the youngest and she being the oldest, I would often go visit her to help her out while her husband was away. I guess this gave me a routine to visit when husband's are away. It seemed that I would always be visiting my family while my own husband was gone for some exercise or other. One particular visit, one of my young nephews asked me," Aunt Jane are you and Uncle Steve divorced?" I was shocked! What made him ask such a question? Then he explained, " I always hear about Uncle Steve, but I don't think I ever met him."

This made me ponder. Aren't I blessed that I can come visit my family while my husband is deployed? Many military wives do this: when hubby deploys they go home to their family. But many wives must stay where they are. This last deployment I didn't have the luxury to make too many visits with 5 kids in school and activities,a home to care for,and a business to grow.

Instead, the family in my community assisted me to cope during this trial. I remember the first Christmas one of the boys from our Boys Scout Troop and Parish came over to help put up Christmas lights. That same Christmas my cousin's friend's organization gave Christmas presents to families of deployed soldiers, and she recommended us. My kids were overwhelmed with wonderful gifts. There were many other examples that people helped, and for that, I will always be grateful. Unfortunately, I also know many wives who aren't supported while their husbands are away. They don't feel they fit in the community, no one seems to reach out and they feel isolated and alone.

Yes, it is a very good thing to thank our veterans and our active duty soldiers by making cards and sending them care packages. And when you do, please remember the wife who takes care of the home front. If there is some one in your neighborhood, your child's class or in your church who has a loved one currently depoyed, ask them over for dinner, make brownies for them, or offer to babysit so they can have a night with some friends. Because Veteran's Wives serve the country too!

For more information about Jane go to:
http://www.wealthyhomeschoolmom.com/

The Adventurer

The month of October is almost ended and in the US that means Halloween. This time of year stores pop up with all kinds of costumes for adults and children to dress up in who ever they want to be.

Earlier in the month, I went to Puerto Rico for a business conference. For the final Gala, the theme was "Adventurers" and we were able to dress up as any adventurer we wanted. This followed our conference theme where we had 3 true adventurers tell us their stories and how to implement what they learned into our lives. The first was Yossi Ghinsberg who had his adventure in the Amazon. He taught me what true survival is and the meaning of true friendship. Steve Donahue talked about his adventure in the Sahara Desert and finding one's compass. Our last adventurer was Neal Petersen one of the few people who has finished the longest, most extreme race of 27,000 miles in a boat for nine months alone! He reminded me of the importance of doing things of significance and never giving up on one's dreams. Each of these great men had the opprtunity to become the best version of themselves.

Many times in life we put on masks and costumes to pretend we are something we are not. Sometimes, like Haloween, it is fun to pretend to be someone else. And yet, in reality, everday of our lives we have the opportunity to become that very person. Every day we have the chance to choose who we are Being through our thoughts, our words and our actions. We can become the great adventurer and enjoy this journey we called life,or we can live simple and small and miss some great opportunities that life has to offer. Me? I'm choosing advenure!

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='J.K. We were discussing curriculum and literature as I am a big proponate for good literature. She told me she teaches with Fantasy Literature and has the kids read the first book of Harry Potter. We had a discussion on the pros and cons of using Harry Potter as a literature book. I had read the book years ago when it first came out with my oldest but was one of those parents who wouldn't recommend Harry Potter for reading.

I asked her if she got parental objection about having the kids read this book and what she said was very enlightening. She told me that over the years there have been a few parents who have come in and told her they didn't want their child reading the book. Her first question to the parent was, have they read the book themselves. Most of the time, they haven't; they are only going on the recommendation of their spiritual leader. She then recommends that the parent read the book with the child and share the objections and comments with the child. She even tells the parent that they can come into the classroom and share their perspective with the whole class. She told me that only 1 parent so far has taken her up on the idea; most of the parents are not willing to take this opportunity and share their perspective with their child and develop their relationship through a book discussion.

So my friend then recommends another book for their child to read. This book, of which I have forgotten the title, is not from a well known and controversial author such as J.K Rowling, However this book does have darker magic, and more evil in it. Since the parents aren't familiar with this author, or have heard any negative remarks about the book, they agree. She offers the parents to read this book with their child as well, but sadly no one has taken her offer or seen the great oportunity to deepen their relationship with their child through literature.

When I was sharing this story with another friend, he was horrified that she would do such a thing. I said, "Well, it serves the parent right, since they don't really want to get involved with their child's education. They are not willing to know for themselves and thus they are abdicating their own parental right to teach their children their own values."

Harry Potter and J.K Rowling have caused much controversy over the years. When I first heard of this book, I didn't want my daughter to read it either, as it dealt in magic. My husband quite astutely pointed out that if this one book was going to have our child practice magic, then we really have no influence and all our efforts to homeschool were for naught. So I let her read the book.

Months later I read a commentary that I thought was very balanced. This guy said that just as we parents wouldn't allow our children to simply eat pizza every day, we also need to balance our children's literary diet as well. Harry Potter along side, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lord of the Rings and other good fantasy books is good. But what is really great, is to expose the children to all types of literature: biographies, historical fiction, mystery and fantasy.

How I see it is that it all basically comes down to knowing for yourself, and taking personal responsiblity. My goal not only in my homeschooling, but in every area of life, my spriritual, my relationships, my business, my volunteering, has been to encourage every individual I meet to get the knowledge they need to achieve the thing they desire.

Knowing for yourself is an attitude of "take what you like and leave the rest". What and how will the information pertain to you? How will it improve or change your life?

This summer we had a Harry Potter week end where we watched all the movies in one week end. Since I hadn't read the books, I didn't understand many parts of the movies. My oldest daughter simply said, " You need to read the books yourself." So, we went to the bookstore bought the series and she, my son, my other daughter and I all read Harry Potter for the summer. This gave us lots of things to talk about and a way to bond that we hadn't before.

I practiced this philosophy of knowing for myself. I was able to share with my children other things that the books reminded me of and apply some of the scenes to different life situations.

I am grateful for my friend to remind me that parenting isn't always simply providing the right environment; sometimes it's also a time for me to Know For Myself as well. And in my business I also must trust and encourage others to know for themselves.

I would love to hear how you decided to be at cause in your life and know for yourself about a topic, or situation.
Make it a great day! I know you deserve it!
Jane

Goal Setting

Many people I speak to in my business have a vague idea of what they want, but when really challenged they either back away because they see the work too hard, or they realize the goal they want is too fuzzy.

I hear people say things like:

" I want to be financially free."

" I want to live comfortably,"

"I want to pay for my kid's college."

Those are great goals, but they are not specific to the individual. There is no clear way of measuring that.

A really good goal, is considered a SMART goal. That is:

S - Specific the more specific you can get it the more your mind will see it. "I want to pay for my kid's college." Sounds specific but it's not. What college does he want to attend? Are you going to pay for the whole amount or is he going to get loans/ scholarships/grants? The more specific you can get, the better your mind can visualize what you desire and help you attain it.

M-Measurable "I want to be financially free" is not measurable. If you are currently earning $40,000 a year and living paycheck to paycheck then you are not financially free. Financial freedom may mean an annual income of $80,000 or $120,000. It has to be measurable. When my son was working towards his black belt, he knew exactly all the techniques and Katas he needed to master.

A_Attainable - I had a guy tell me his goal was to purchase a private submarine that cost 87 Million dollars and yet his annual income had only been $30,000. That was not attainable at the moment - it could be in the future, if he was willing to make some changes.

R- Relevant - Your goal is yours, not your neighbors, not your spouse's, not your children's not your boss'. If your goal is not relevant to you, you will not have the inner drive it takes to attain that goal. Not everyone wants to achieve a black belt in Karate. Not everyone wants to learn to make $20,000 in one month. Find the thing that gets you excited and you know you are on the right track.

T-Timetable - able. This is probably the one area I see people struggle. I know I have done this myself. We set a goal, we work hard toward that goal and on the date "we" set - it doesn't happen. A friend of mine taught me to simple change the date. At first I thought well, that's "cheating". As I have studied goal setting and others who have achieved their goals, this is EXACTLY what you must do - IF you really want to achieve that goal. There are Olympian athletes who have a goal of achieving the gold medal in their sport. They may miss it by .03 of a second and win the silver. What do they do? Go back and train for 4 more years to attain that goal of the gold medal. Now if they can do that, why can't you?My son's teacher had him on track to attain his black belt in 5 years. There were others in his class that took an extra 6 months. I have a friend who had a goal of buying a 4,000 sq ft house in a particular area where he lived. He worked hard, it was specific the exact house, it was measurable, it was attainable and it was relevant - and yet, he put this house on his goal card for 4 years before the time was right to attain it. Did he achieve it? Yes. Did he achieve it the first time he placed it on his goal card? No. Did it matter? No. He knew what he wanted and he kept going for it.

And this brings me to the another important part, not only do many people not have their goals specific but they don't write them down. There is a physiological and psychological reason for writing your goal down. Writing it down affirms in your mind and your body that this is truly what you want. There are many times I sit down and write a shopping list and then leave the list on the counter. When I come home from my shopping, I am amazed at the fact that I purchased about 98% of what I wrote down.

Now, the last and probably most important thing about goals is once you have decided what your goal is, seek out those who have already achieved this goal to assist you. My son studied under a 7th degree black belt and trusted that if he simply followed what the teacher taught him, he would achieve his goal.

So now I must ask you, where do you see yourself in one year from now on June 18, 2010? What do you want to have accomplished in your life financially, physically, spiritually or emotionally? If you want some assistance you may call me at 915-252-1837.

Make it a great day -and remember "You can't get to where you want if you don't know what you want"

GBY&MKY Jane

Swamp Coolers and Self Reliance

A few weeks ago we had a rain storm and our neighborhood's lights were off for about 45 minutes. When they turned on again, our swamp coolers didn't. We live in the desert where "swamp coolers" are a norm. Rather than "refrigerated air" we have these things that have a thin water hose that drips water and the air is cooled down. I don't truly understand it except that when it gets to a certain percentage of humidity - usually in July and August they don't work too well. But for the most part they are great and keep the house cool!

On this particular day, after the electricity went off they weren't keeping the house cool as they weren't working. My husband checked the fuse box and then called our home warranty company to let them know they weren't working. Being a holiday week end nobody came until Tues morning. Luckily it wasn't very hot and the air was cool at night.

When the air guys came I told them what happened. They checked the swamp coolers on the roof and determined that unless it's an electrical thing, they were pretty sure it was simply the thermostats that blew out. They would then call the warranty company and see what to do next.

Two days later it WAS getting hot in our house and I finally called the home warranty company to see what was the hold up. When the company learned that the thermostats had blown out due to an electrical outage after a rain storm they informed me that "Acts of God" were NOT covered in our warranty and we had to fix it ourselves.

I called my husband and asked him to pick up a couple of thermostats at Home Depot on the way home and we would have to fix it ourselves. It turns out that those two thermostats cost less than it did for us to have the experts come out and make sure what the problem was.

As I thought about this I laughed. I have a friend, John Lavenia, who wrote a book called Intergity Is Everything. John has a premise, which I completely agree with, about becoming self reliant. As I thought about how we weren't self reliant in this case, I thought we could do next time to be more self reliant.

Then it hit me. How many of us have warranty companies, insurance companies and even health care benefits? I am not saying these are not recommended. What I'm asking is, how much money would I like to have in a home maintenance account so I don't have to depend upon a home warranty company who may or may not fix my home? And if I had that account so I don't have to worry about the cost of anything in my home breaking or needing fixing what would I worry about? What if we educated ourselves enough about home maintenance to evaluate what the cause of that was? Instead, we turned to a company trusting them to have someone "save us".

I then thought about all the money I have going to a health insurance company that pays for my health care - at least pays for the health care that the company wants to provide. I have done lots of studying about health, natural healing and alternative medicines that I feel more self reliant on my own evaluation in the area of health than I do about home maintenance. I know when I can do things at home to assist my health and when it's time to go to the experts.

And then of course my thoughts went to the fact that as an entreprenuer I am more reliant on myself for my income than I am relying on a company that may or may not decide to fire me due to whatever reason they want to give me. And as an entreprenuer, I am to stand on my own two feet, educate myself on what type of maintenance my business needs and then proceed. I'm not waiting for someone to tell me they won't pay me because of some " Act of God".

So my question to you is: How self reliant are you? What areas of your life do you want to be 100% responsible for and take to the next level?

My mission is to assist others to their highest good. When we used to live in Alexandria, Va. we would attend Mass at the Immaculate Conception Basillica and then go to the Arlington Cemetery to honor those who gave their lives for us.

Three years ago on Memorial Day week end my husband got called back on active duty. Many people, including our pastor, questioned our reasoning for this decision. Yes, my husband had already been retired for 5 years; yes we had a family of 5; yes, I almost died after the last baby from a double pulmonary embolism. But as we discussed this option of him going, we both knew in our hearts that some of our young soldiers were on their 2nd and 3rd tour overseas protecting our lifestyle. And we knew that if we could simply keep one husband or wife from spending even more time away from their family then it would be worth the sacrifice.

Was it hard? It was the hardest 2 years seperation I have ever had to endure. And yet, it also was the most enlightening time I have ever had as well. When my husband left, I made the intention that I would spend time getting to know Jane - really getting to know myself and accepting myself for who I am.

In Louis Marie De Montfort's classic Total Consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary Spiritual Exercises, the first ten days are spent getting to know yourself. For if you don't know yourself, you can't know your Creator either.

What I discovered is that not only am I loveable and worthy, but I have many gifts to use to better this world. And I discovered that it is OK to take care of oneself first before your husband, before your children and before your household duties and serving in the community. As the flight attendant always reminds us in an airplane; "Put your mask on first before assisting others. "

Toward the end of this journey not only had I grown in ways I didn't think possible, I was introduced to a business where not only do I have the opportunity to continue my personal growth, but I am rewarded monetarily for being the example for others to what is possible.

And what I am finding is there is freedom in allowing yourself to truly become the best version of yourself. YOU are at cause for your life - not your family, not your job, not your government - YOU. Maybe because I am born in the spring I feel such a connection to this season. But I think it is more than that. I love to hear the birds chirp outside my windows as I feel the col breeze come in. I love the smell of newly cut grass and the beautiful flowers that are beginning to bloom.

Many people think that since we live here in the desert, there is only dryness and sand. And many people only see the sand and feel the heat.

And many people right now only see and listen to the doom and gloom that the mainstream media portrays day in and day out. I see opportunities and growth. Just as I look at nature and see a time of blooming, I know in the economic climate we are seeing growth and blooming.

I know that just as the people who lived in the major shift between the Agricultural and Industrial Ages had to take control and seize the opportunities, we are in a major shift today. Are you taking control of your life or are you hoping the government, your company or your retirement fund will save you?

I see the growth in my garden of prosperity. If you aren't sure how to get your garden started or if you are FINALLY ready to really take control of your own future - call me -
800-814-0709.

Make it a great day because you know what?? As with a human child, the gestation period is about 9 months. But let's think about this whole concept of gestation. We know biologically that once the sperm and the egg join they form a new being called a zygote. As a Catholic I believe it is at that moment the soul and the body are joined to form this new creature called a human being. But who else knows about this potential being except the great Creator? If a woman is under careful doctor's supervision for fertility purposes, the pregnancy is known at an early stage, but typically it's about 2 or 3 weeks before the mother of that new being even is aware that she is carrying life. And from the outside nothing has changed - her belly is not full with child, her hips haven't gotten bigger in preparation for childbirth; she may not even feel the slightest sickness. And yet, there IS a child, a human child growing within.

As we discussed earlier the faculties of the mind are the part which seperates humans from the rest of the animal kingdom. It is our power to think, to imagine, to dream of things that are not yet in the material world. These are the connections with the spiritual world; the world of possiblities. Have you ever wondered how the concept of the automobile came to Henry Ford? What was it that gave Thomas Edison the perserverance to try over 1,000 times to develop the light bulb? Take a look at a table, a chair or even the most beautiful painting and meditate on the fact that SOMEONE had this idea in their mind before they were able to create it in the physical world.

The law of Gestation states that all things have a time to fruition, and yet like a young seed that is planted in the ground it must be given time to gestate. As spring is upon us in North America, plants that looked dead in the winter are now beginning to show growth and life. But would that plant have the opportunity if the seed had been planted, dug up, looked at, planted again, dug up etc.? This is exactly what many of us do with our own dreams and goals. We have a desire or a dream to accomplish something or become someone and yet we continually look to see how it is growing instead of trusting the process of gestation and caring for that dream or goal. Many of us have planted the seeds and simply give up, not watering it, not giving it sunshine just forgetting it like a ruined plant.

Sometimes it is others around us that convince us to believe our dream will never grow, sometimes it is simply our own fears that get in the way.

The Law of Gestation allows a tomato plant to grow tomatos in a matter of weeks and a bamboo plant to take seven years before the shoot is seen out of the ground. Both tomtatoes and bamboo trees are necessary in our world.

What dreams or goals have you not allowed to gestate? Do you spend enough quiet time in your day to connect with the Spiritual world to allow your dreams and goals to be visualized? Do you surround yourself with encouraging people who trust in the Law of Gestation and know that your dreams just a moment away?

I have found a community that does just that. It is a community where anything is possible. It is a community that no matter how small or how outrageous your dream may seem, you are encouraged to nuture that dream during gestation and celebrate the beginnning as well as the end.
To find out more go to my website:
http://www.wealthyhomeschoolmom.com/

Make it a great day! This is where I must begin my blogging, for without life I wouldn't be here writing nor would you be here reading. As a Catholic I believe that I am made in the image and likeness of God. I also believe that because of this great gift of "Godness", each and every person has uniqueness and greatness within themselves. From the moment of conception when the soul, the part of God within us, and our body are co mingled within our mother's womb, sometimes without her knowledge or consent, we ARE. As the ancient books states, " I knew you before you were born."

How can we as mere creatures interfere with such magnamity? And humans are not the only thing that has been given life - all animals and plants, great and small are given this great gift. But with humans, because we have been given the faculties of the mind; perception,. memory, logic, imagination and intuition, we have a higher calling and thus are called to give and to receive a greater respect.

This is what I know to be true. And as such I am called to become the best version of myself. I have found that to truly use all of these talents, there are 3 main relationships I must develop. The first is my relationship with my Creator for He knows me better than myself. And yet, when I develop this relationship I, myself am relvealed to me. The next most important relationship is to my family - first, my husband and my children ,then my extended family. And lastly the relationship to my fellow brothers and sisters within my world today.

As part of my relationship with my husband it is imperative to love unconditionally. And thanks to Pope John Paul II, I have gained great wisdom about this unique relationship. Many times Jesus used Marriage as an alagory to our relationship with Our Father in Heaven. When a relationship is based on a lie such as contraception, the lie perpetuates and eventually causes damage. Pope John Paul II truly understood the beauty of the marriage covenant, the act of which one renews their marriage vows. We call it in lay man's terms of love making because literally the couple's love is so strong that this love is manifested and 9 months later is given a name and thus a family is created. When this flow of life is blocked through selfishness or ignorance, the flow of unconditional love is also blocked.

What has this to do with a Wealthy Homeschool Mom? Celebrating Life, Enjoying Life, Being Grateful for Life is what this blog is all about. Are you truly living the Life God wants for you? Are you using all the gifts He has given you? Are you using contraception not only in your sexual area of life but in other areas of life? How can you truly be the conduit for the flow of Life?

I'd love to hear from you!
May you celebrate this day of Life as if it were your last!
Many blessings,
Jane
