There is a spiritual law called "Gestation" that every thought or idea must come to fruition in it's proper time. As with a human child, the gestation period is about 9 months. But let's think about this whole concept of gestation. We know biologically that once the sperm and the egg join they form a new being called a zygote. As a Catholic I believe it is at that moment the soul and the body are joined to form this new creature called a human being. But who else knows about this potential being except the great Creator? If a woman is under careful doctor's supervision for fertility purposes, the pregnancy is known at an early stage, but typically it's about 2 or 3 weeks before the mother of that new being even is aware that she is carrying life. And from the outside nothing has changed - her belly is not full with child, her hips haven't gotten bigger in preparation for childbirth; she may not even feel the slightest sickness. And yet, there IS a child, a human child growing within.
As we discussed earlier the faculties of the mind are the part which seperates humans from the rest of the animal kingdom. It is our power to think, to imagine, to dream of things that are not yet in the material world. These are the connections with the spiritual world; the world of possiblities. Have you ever wondered how the concept of the automobile came to Henry Ford? What was it that gave Thomas Edison the perserverance to try over 1,000 times to develop the light bulb? Take a look at a table, a chair or even the most beautiful painting and meditate on the fact that SOMEONE had this idea in their mind before they were able to create it in the physical world.
The law of Gestation states that all things have a time to fruition, and yet like a young seed that is planted in the ground it must be given time to gestate. As spring is upon us in North America, plants that looked dead in the winter are now beginning to show growth and life. But would that plant have the opportunity if the seed had been planted, dug up, looked at, planted again, dug up etc.? This is exactly what many of us do with our own dreams and goals. We have a desire or a dream to accomplish something or become someone and yet we continually look to see how it is growing instead of trusting the process of gestation and caring for that dream or goal. Many of us have planted the seeds and simply give up, not watering it, not giving it sunshine just forgetting it like a ruined plant.
Sometimes it is others around us that convince us to believe our dream will never grow, sometimes it is simply our own fears that get in the way.
The Law of Gestation allows a tomato plant to grow tomatos in a matter of weeks and a bamboo plant to take seven years before the shoot is seen out of the ground. Both tomtatoes and bamboo trees are necessary in our world.
What dreams or goals have you not allowed to gestate? Do you spend enough quiet time in your day to connect with the Spiritual world to allow your dreams and goals to be visualized? Do you surround yourself with encouraging people who trust in the Law of Gestation and know that your dreams just a moment away?
I have found a community that does just that. It is a community where anything is possible. It is a community that no matter how small or how outrageous your dream may seem, you are encouraged to nuture that dream during gestation and celebrate the beginnning as well as the end.
